Job Description

The Technologist - Anesthesiology is an integral member of the peri-operative team performs operational activities and is responsible for patient safety during high risk surgery procedures in a variety of clinical settings.

She/he demonstrates practical knowledge and expertise in all general areas of anesthesia and must have a thorough knowledge of the set-up, operation and troubleshooting of anesthesia delivery systems, monitors, and ancillary devices.

The Technologist is responsible for maintaining a sufficient inventory of all equipment and supplies.

The Technologist is responsible for ensuring that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard.

The Technologist participates in the supervision and teaching of more junior and new members of staff within the department.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Sets up, tests, calibrates and operates complex physiologic monitors such as anesthesia workstations, intubation/airway devices, fiber optic endoscopes, physiologic monitors and infusion devices.

  • Troubleshoots anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functional equipment to the proper department for repair.

  • Assists in the preparation of the patient for anesthesia and performs pre-operative assessments as requested by the anesthesiologist.

  • Consults Operating Room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for procedures.

  • Sets up, tests, calibrates and operates complex physiologic monitors such as anesthesia workstations, intubation/airway devices, fiber optic endoscopes, physiologic monitors and infusion devices.

  • Troubleshoots anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functional equipment to the proper department for repair.

  • Supports anesthesia providers using aseptic or sterile technique with non-invasive and invasive patient procedures including peripheral and/or central intravenous and/or arterial line placement; airway management techniques including mask, endotracheal and/or emergency methods and regional anesthesia techniques.

  • Leads in the preparation of the patient for anesthesia and performs pre-operative assessments as requested by the anesthesiologist.

  • Ensures anesthesia providers have physiologic monitoring of patients notifying the anesthesia provider(s) of abnormal changes in vital signs and/or physical appearance of the patient.

  • Supports intra-hospital patient transport, insuring integrity of all monitoring and/or circulatory support devices.

  • Participates in the operating room infection control programs by performing duties such as maintaining cleanliness in anesthetic equipment in accordance with quality assurance programs

  • Ensures strict adherence to established procedures to minimize operating room pollution

  • Maintains appropriate supplies and equipment in supply carts, report needs/usage to supervisor as required

  • Obtains supplies and equipment as requested by anesthesia providers

  • Assists with patient laboratory tests and results including, but not limited to, ABG's, ACTs and other point of care tests

  • Obtains blood products and pharmaceuticals assisting with preparation and delivery under the direct supervision of the anesthetist. Maintains immediate availability to assist in routine and emergency procedures.

  • Participates in patient education programs.

  • Develops and sustains (maintains) own knowledge, clinical skills (mandatory training) and professional. (portfolio or profile) awareness and maintains a professional profile. Provides documented evidence of performance and maintenance of skills consistent with position.

  • Participates in departmental Quality Improvement and Risk Management Activities.

  • Participates in new staff/ student orientation aimed at developing competence and performance.

  • Participates in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication and teamwork. Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.

  • Maintains a professional demeanor at all times.

  • Acts as a role model for junior staff.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS - REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL
Education Bachelor's degree in the field of anesthesia
Experience 2+ years of recent experience within relevant specialty
Certification and Licensure

  • Certified in Country of Origin - CER.A.T.

  • Eligible to be licensed in State of Qatar.

  • BLS

Professional Membership Member of Professional Anesthesia Technology Association in Country of Origin

  • Demonstrated abilities to trouble shoot anesthesia delivery system, scavenger system and physiologic monitoring systems

  • Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it applies to anesthesia

  • Care and detailed technical knowledge

Sidra Medicine is a 400-bed women's and children's hospital, medical education and biomedical research center in Doha, Qatar. The hospital first opened its outpatient facility in 2016, followed by its inpatient hospital in January 2018. Qatar Foundation, a quasi-government organization, allotted a massive $7.9 billion budget for the hospital's construction. It first selected the center's contractors in 2008 but in 2014 assigned new contractors to complete the project. Biomedical research first began at Sidra in 2015. Outpatient care facilities and services were inaugurated in May 2016; as of 2018 there are at least 50 outpatient facilities. Throughout 2017, more than 25,000 people were treated at the hospital's outpatient clinic. On 14 January 2018, Sidra launched its inpatient hospital with 400 beds, treating 10 patients on its initial day of opening. The hospital is expected to become fully commissioned sometime in 2018, after the construction of an emergency department and the addition of further services.
