Job Summary

The Technician - Orthodontics delivers, maintains and develops a high-quality technical service for orthodontic, cleft lip and palate, and craniofacial patients being treated in Sidra Hospital. The incumbent constructs a range of bespoke specialist orthodontic including:

  • Pressure formed retainers

  • Hawley Retainers

  • Removable Appliances

  • All types of Functional appliances

  • Rapid Maxillary Expansion, Trihelix, Quad helix and Habit breaker appliances

  • Speech therapy appliances

S/he provides full technological service for orthognathic surgery including model planning and model surgery for mandibular, maxillary and Bi-maxillary procedures.

Key Role Accountabilities Technical

  • Supports a technical and advisory technical service for orthodontics.

  • Constructs a full range of complex functional, fixed and removable appliances.

  • Constructs innovative appliances and provides technical expertise for research, development and teaching.

  • Provides technical expertise in the provision of pre surgical orthognathic treatment planning, and construction of planning model analogues and splints.

  • Liaises with the orthodontic and craniofacial Consultants on the pre-surgical treatment planning options for orthognathic cases and ensures a timely delivery of planning aids.

  • Communicates effectively with orthognathic patients during face bow registration techniques.

  • Ensures the timely delivery of orthodontic technical materials, monitoring stock against agreed levels.

  • Ensures equipment is fit for the task and maintained in a safe manner, reports any defects through the line manager.

  • Takes a proactive role in the health and safety standards in the laboratory, raises concerns with the Department's Manager when appropriate.

  • Monitors the quality of all orthodontic technical procedures, ensuring they are carried out in accordance with the Medical Device Directive.

  • Uses judgment and analytical skills to interpret, understand and to assess suitability of requested work and then provide options where necessary.

  • Competent in the use of specialist equipment e.g. high-speed grinding, trimming and polishing for prolonged periods with intense concentration and using high levels of hand eye co-ordination.

  • Uses highly developed skills of manual dexterity such as accurately bend and adapt specialist wires whilst working to very fine tolerances.

  • Competent with a wide range of chemicals, specialist dental materials that require an understanding of the materials science of such products.

Self - management

  • Manages the day-to-day orthodontic technical workload providing services and appliances to the dental clinic including quality control.

  • Plans and organizes own workload, adjusts priorities to accommodate emergency or urgent requests.

  • Responsible for assisting in the management and day to day running of the orthodontic laboratory.

  • Maintains the flow of study models through the laboratory.

Communication

  • Committed to working and engaging constructively with members of the Craniofacial and Orthodontic department.

  • Provides, receives and analyzes complex and sensitive information and makes judgements based on the information.

  • Communicates complex information on design and application of medical devices, the information may be conveyed to Consultants or Clinical assistants.

  • Communicates effectively with all members of the team to ensure an effective service is provided.

Policy and Service Development

  • Assists in the development of plans, processes and departmental policies to ensure that the hospital conforms to the requirements of relevant legislation.

  • Maintains a good knowledge of emerging policies from government departments and external bodies which may impact the service.

Administrative

  • Responsible for timely and accurate record keeping and where appropriate in accordance with professional guidelines.

  • Responsible for the creation, maintenance and storage of records in line with Sidra's hospital policy.

  1. Training and Education

  • Identifies and actions own training needs and research and development as required in the context of improving patient care by challenging their own practice.

  • Contributes to the training and education of other dept. staff and placement students, in relation to orthodontics and induction of new starters.

  • Organizes and contributes to research and development work, provides models for demonstration and audit purposes.

  • Provides support to junior members in the team.

  • Attends and plays an active role in departmental staff and audit meetings.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills - Selection Criteria ESSENTIAL PREFERRED
Education

  • BTEC Diploma in Dental Technology or Degree / H.N.D /C. Majoring Orthodontics, or equivalent.

  • BSc in Dental Technology/MSc in Dental Technology

  • Evidence of an ongoing interest in Orthodontic Technology.

  • Training on a verifiable osteotomy planning course
    Experience 3+ years' post qualification experience of Orthodontics within a hospital setting. Evidence of ability to provide a high-level orthodontic service
    Certification and Licensure

Licensed in country of origin as a Dental Technician

Eligible for licensure as a Dental Technician in the State of Qatar
Job Specific Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of fixed, functional and removable appliances is required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Osteotomy planning including Facebow recording on patients and impression taking

  • A high degree of precision and dexterity is required for the construction of appliances.

  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate small hand tools and wire components with a high degree of precision.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize own workload, time manage workload to accommodate urgent work.

  • Computer literate, ability to communicate complex information.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

  • Fluency in written and spoken English

Sidra Medicine is a 400-bed women's and children's hospital, medical education and biomedical research center in Doha, Qatar. The hospital first opened its outpatient facility in 2016, followed by its inpatient hospital in January 2018. Qatar Foundation, a quasi-government organization, allotted a massive $7.9 billion budget for the hospital's construction. It first selected the center's contractors in 2008 but in 2014 assigned new contractors to complete the project. Biomedical research first began at Sidra in 2015. Outpatient care facilities and services were inaugurated in May 2016; as of 2018 there are at least 50 outpatient facilities. Throughout 2017, more than 25,000 people were treated at the hospital's outpatient clinic. On 14 January 2018, Sidra launched its inpatient hospital with 400 beds, treating 10 patients on its initial day of opening. The hospital is expected to become fully commissioned sometime in 2018, after the construction of an emergency department and the addition of further services.
